Sargassum

Description

Sargassum spp.

Smells awful on the beach, looks awesome in your tank.

What You Get

A hand-collected, anchored form of Sargassum from the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean, one of the few brown macroalgae that adapt well to aquaria. Each plant grows from a single holdfast on hard bottom and forms firm, upright branches with golden brown, pointed fronds.

Many pieces show small round air bladders near the tips, while deeper water forms may lack bladders. Provide very bright light, moderate to high flow, and steady nutrients and trace elements. Do not bury the base or stems; mount to rock or a frag plug with reef safe gel glue or fishing line.

Why It Is Algaesome

  • Beach legend, reef hero: It may be stinky when stranded, but underwater it is pure gold.
  • True brown macro: One of the few brown algae that can thrive in display tanks.
  • Dynamic structure: Sturdy, upright branches that sway naturally in the current.
  • Habitat builder: Offers cover for pods and small fish while helping to balance nutrients.
  • Collector’s choice: A genuine slice of Gulf and Caribbean ecology, rarely offered in attached form.

Sizing & Availability

Each portion is a single attached specimen approximately 5–8 inches tall. Natural variation in leaf shape and color, from golden brown to dark olive, is expected. Availability is seasonal and depends on weather and water clarity.

A Note from the Collectors:
Every macroalga we offer is hand collected, acclimated, and observed by our team before shipping. While we carefully try to remove other algae, sponges, and tiny hitchhikers, it is possible that a few goodies from the reef may tag along. It is a natural part of receiving genuine wild collected specimens.

Many species may arrive paler or whitish in color. This is completely normal. Macroalgae shift their pigments inward during transport to protect from light and stress; color returns within a few days under good aquarium lighting and flow.

We ship via 2 Day service on Mondays and Tuesdays only to ensure specimens arrive healthy. You will receive a notification with tracking information as soon as your order ships.
