Mangrove Pod

Description

Red Mangrove Propagule (Rhizophora mangle)

Every reef deserves a waterfront property.

Mangroves are a symbol of Florida’s coastal ecosystems. They root in sandy shallows, arch above tidal flats, and serve as nurseries for countless marine species. The red mangrove develops distinctive prop roots that rise above the waterline to gather oxygen, provide stability, and create living habitat for sponges, macroalgae, worms, tunicates, crabs, and filter-feeding invertebrates. In aquariums, they bring that same sculptural beauty and ecological function.

What You Get

  • One legally and responsibly collected red mangrove propagule (seed pod).
  • Some may already show early roots or leaves depending on season and holding time.
  • Suitable for refugiums, frag tanks, sumps, and planted marine systems.

Why It’s Algaesome

  • Creates natural vertical structure and visual interest.
  • Prop roots can become microhabitats for sponges, algae, and small invertebrates.
  • Slow, steady nutrient utilization that complements macroalgae growth.
  • Excellent educational and long-term display species.
  • Tolerant, hardy, and surprisingly low-maintenance once established.

Sizing & Availability

  • Typical length: 6–14 inches
  • Only propagules can be legally collected and sold in Florida; established trees can never be harvested. We sometimes collect propagules and grow them out in our mud tanks, so you may receive a specimen with early root development and a few leaves already formed.
  • Generally available year-round.

Care Notes
Red mangroves are slow-growing in aquariums and should not be relied upon as primary nutrient export. Position so the upper portion remains above the waterline, and periodically mist leaves with fresh water to remove accumulated salt. Pods may be floated in foam, secured upright in substrate, or supported using PVC or dowels. Provide stable salinity, strong lighting, and patience because mangroves reward long-term care.
Shipping & Availability
We ship via 2-Day service on Mondays and Tuesdays only to ensure live arrival and quality. You’ll receive tracking as soon as your order heads out. Seasonal weather, tides, and maturation cycles may influence availability and size.
