Description
A rare lace-like beauty from Florida and the Caribbean.
About This Species
Portieria is one of the most striking red macroalgae in Florida and the Caribbean. It has thick fronds with dainty, lace-patterned ends, giving it an elegant look. In shallow waters, it forms dense, bushy colonies, while in deeper habitats (down to about 65 feet in The Gulf), it grows taller and sparser, swaying beautifully in the current. Though it is rare on the reef, it’s abundant where and when found. It is hardy in aquariums, and under tank lighting it usually settles into a rich, deep red, though wild specimens can range from orange to golden yellow.
What Makes It Special
-
Delicate lace appearance: Its flattened, segmented fronds sway gracefully, adding movement and texture.
-
Rare and seasonal: Available only a few times annually, making it a prized collector’s item.
-
Color versatility: Wild specimens display hues from red to yellow, but it usually adopts a deep crimson in tanks.
-
Resilient in aquariums: Once acclimated, it’s a hardy and beautiful macro, thriving with gentle flow and moderate light — just handle carefully to protect the tips of the fronds.
