Penicillus dumetosus — Merman’s Shaving Brush
Brush up your reef.
What You Get
The largest of the Penicillus species, P. dumetosus forms upright, calcareous “brushes” with thick mineralized stems and vibrant-green bristled tops. In nature, it anchors firmly into sandy bottoms using a bulb and fine rhizoids. In the aquarium this means it requires a deeper sand bed (3"+) for long-term success. We collect each Merman's Shaving Brush intact with its bulb and a small amount of surrounding sand.
Why It Is Algaesome
-
Instant aquascape upgrade: Creates a natural, grassy reef-flat look.
-
Built-in structure: Lightly calcified stems hold their shape in flow.
-
Grazer-proof: Generally ignored by fish and most invertebrates.
-
Sand bed specialist: Root-like rhizoids let it anchor and spread over time.

A Note from the Collectors:
Every macroalga we offer is hand-collected, acclimated, and observed by our team before shipping. While we carefully try to remove other algae, sponges, and tiny hitchhikers, it’s possible that a few “goodies” from the reef may tag along. It's a natural part of receiving genuine wild-collected specimens!
Many species may arrive paler or whitish in color. This is completely normal. Macroalgae shift their pigments inward during transport to protect from light and stress; color returns within a few days under good aquarium lighting and flow.
We ship via 2-Day service on Mondays and Tuesdays only to ensure specimens arrive healthy. You’ll receive a notification with tracking information as soon as your order ships.
