Dead Man's Fingers

Description

Codium sp. - Dead Man's Fingers

Ghostly & Straight from Davy Jones’ garden.

What You Get

A lush, spongy green macroalga with thick, finger-like branches that move gently in the flow. Branch tips carry a soft fuzz, which gives it the look of a living sponge and adds a ghostly, textured presence to the aquascape.

Codium anchors by a single holdfast and forms rounded clusters that resemble miniature underwater shrubs. In the wild it grows on hard substrate in cooler, well oxygenated water. In the aquarium it provides soft contrast against rock and coral, and works especially well in lagoon and peninsula style layouts where its shape can be viewed from multiple angles.

Why It Is Algaesome

  • Highlights: Sponge-like form with gentle, flowing motion that looks at home in reefs and lagoons.
  • Palatability: Usually ignored by most herbivores, which helps it last as a long term display specimen.
  • Care: Prefers cooler conditions under 80°F, moderate to bright light, and steady flow that keeps the surface clean.
  • Nutrient uptake: Provides fair nutrient uptake and added habitat, but is best used as a decorative macro rather than a primary export tool.
  • Color: Naturally deep green that holds its richness under reef lighting.

Sizing and Availability

Each specimen measures approximately 3 to 4 inches in diameter with natural variation in shape and fullness. Availability is generally seasonal and best during cooler months when conditions are most favorable for collection.

A Note from the Collectors:
Every macroalga we offer is hand-collected, acclimated, and observed by our team before shipping. While we carefully try to remove other algae, sponges, and tiny hitchhikers, it is possible that a few goodies from the reef may tag along. It is a natural part of receiving genuine wild-collected specimens.

Many species may arrive paler or whitish in color. This is completely normal. Macroalgae shift their pigments inward during transport to protect from light and stress, and color usually returns within a few days under good aquarium lighting and flow.

We ship via 2-day service on Mondays and Tuesdays only to help ensure specimens arrive healthy. You will receive a notification with tracking information as soon as your order ships.
